It's Tyra!!!! - ANTM All-Stars Week 2

To contact us Click HERE

It's week 2! Yee-haw! We're getting right into this All-Star season, aren't we? This episode we get Ty-overs, drama and a gross hotdog photo shoot. Allez-y!!

Before I get to the recap, I realize that I forgot to mention last week that I saw the actual biggest All-Star from ANTM...in terms of actual success, I mean. I went to a TIFF screening of the new Whit Stillman movie, Damsels in Distress, and saw Analeigh Tipton (from cycle 11) on my way in and my way out. The film was really funny and the acting by Greta Gerwig and the rest of the cast was excellent. Still...there were a few moments where I totally caught Analeigh (or "Lily" as her character is called) wicked smizing at the camera. I'm sure Analeigh is going to be in lots more films, but I really hope for her sake that she can find an acting coach to de-program the ANTM out of her. No more smizing, Analeigh!

And now...the recap.

What did we learn about Tyra this week?

Tyra shows up for 10 seconds early on in the episode and introduces us to Martin Lindstrom...her brand strategist. Oh lawd.

Tyra tells the girls that Martin is harsh but he gets results. Tyra, in my humble opinion your "brand" is one of the worst out there. Your idioms and Tyra-isms are dreadful, you are the opposite of sincere, no one on planet earth is more arrogant...how much are you paying this Martin Lindstrom fellow? You should try and get your money back and let someone else try to save your brand.

Tyra had them make a new intro! Horrible. It looks like they hired some high school kid who is obsessed with Floria Sigismondi to make it. Tyra makes sure he includes an unnecessary shot of her slapping her own butt. The girls are smearing what I think is frosting (but what looks like meat) all over the place. Barf.

Tyra is continuing to dress like one of the Newsies this season with her ugly ties and suspenders. If you live in Toronto and wake up early for work like me, you'll totally agree that Tyra is dressing like Kevin Frankish this cycle. "Traffic and weather together on the ones! Now lets check in with Frankie Flowers".

During deliberations, Tyra decides to give Nigel Barker a Ty-over and shaves off some of his hair. Nigel, you put out a book last year and you have charity work...lots of stuff going on...why the fuck do you put up with Tyra's antics? You know that ALT doesn't put up with as much. It may be okay for the Jays, but sweetheart...what does Tyra have on you? Is it bad? Get the authorities involved if you can and get away!

Did anything else happen this week?

After clips of the girls pretending to be excited about the prizes, we get sound bites about elimination and how no one is too sad Brittany is gone. Sheena then starts telling us about how much she wants to win. Uh oh. I like Sheena so I'm worried for her.

Tyra's brand guru Martin is there to assign each girl a word that summarizes what their ANTM brand is.
"Your brand...granola bar"
"Your brand word is bonnet. Where is your bonnet?"
"Sorry, but your brand is piss diaper"
"Your brand word is, ummm..."

The brand word I would assign Martin is "Sprockets" on account of his black turtleneck and Euro-accent (Swedish, not German, but still). In case that old timey-SNL reference is lost on you, my backup brand word for Martin is rude. He asks each girl questions like, "Do people trust you?" and when they say yes, he quickly responds with a "No". He tells Kayla that being a lesbian is so five years ago. For serious. It becomes apparent pretty quick that this one-word brand nonsense is a clever way for the producers to get rid of some of the girls who aren't as exciting as the others. Why else would they give ambiguous and conceptual words like "free" and "unexpected" to some girls, and then give the rest much easier words to work with?
"Sorry that lesbianism is out of style. I'm a single man. Wanna go for dinner with me at Ikea?"

When Martin told Angelea she is like "cheap shoes", I was really hoping she'd go a little Cheektowaga on him and set him straight. "Hey Sprockets, just because there are some very fine bargains at the DSW at the Walden Galleria, doesn't mean I'm all up in that. Don't get it twisted." Angelea's word is persistence, which I hope means that Tyra will keep her around for awhile. She and Isis are my two faves right now.
Martin tells Alexandria that her fans think she's annoying and that there's no value in what she's saying. That would be really hard to hear, and Alexandria takes it surprisingly well. It wouldn't shock me to learn that most of her silly soundbites from last season are the result of being prodded for hours by producers looking to portray her as that cycle's cray-cray lady. Buck up, Alexandria. I don't think you're annoying. Especially compared to this:There is some fake drama with Bianca, Camille and Dominique which is too dumb to spend much time discussing. Mr. Jay! Miss J! Ashlee Simpson? Ashlee is apparently there to oversee the Ty-overs for the contestants. Wouldn't that make them Simp-overs? Nose jobs for everyone!!! Anyways, Tyra is too lazy to even dream up make-overs for the contestants this cycle. It must not fit with her brand.

Bianca gives Isis a lesson about the difference between weaves and extentions: "Weave is like the ghetto word. You're supposed to say extentions. Weave just sounds tacky...weave is tacky, and you are tacky so you are weave. I am extentions."

Miss J tells Sheena that she will be getting her hair chopped off...and then lets her know he's kidding. Because her word is unexpected, she is supposed to expect the unexpected and...her look stays exactly the same. Lisa wants to keep her hair long because she's getting married in 2 months. Of course they chop it off and Mr Jay gives her shit when she speaks up about it. If you had told me to cut my hair 2 months before my wedding, I probably would have stabbed you. Don't fuck with the bride-to-be! Lisa accepts the change and her haircut does look really good.

Isis and Dominique do pretty great impressions of Alexandria getting her hair chopped off. She screams in happiness, and it seems fake, fake, fake. She even cries later on because she says she's so happy about how she looks.

Bre has a meltdown in the bathroom about them chopping off her hair. They show Bianca being sweet with her later in the episode, trying to cheer her up about her hair. I hope they continue to show more of Bre and Bianca's friendship this cycle. It's one of the only things on this cycle that seems genuine.

The Jays show up with Pinks chili dogs and try to sell them to the girls as being classy. The girls will be creating a hot dog and then shooting with the dog while keeping their brand word in mind. The idea for this shoot is one of the worst in ANTM history. It's just gross. I'm not even going to recap it. Just look at these pics:

Panel! Ashley Simpson is the guest judge. I hate her styling: she's wearing a black turtleneck with a heart cut-out over the boobs and too much makeup and jewellery. Her styling reminds me of Kelly Taylor's mom on BH 90210 when she was doing coke at the school fashion show.

On to the photos...the judges love Dominique's photo even though she looks like she's smelling her guacamole-covered fingers. Bianca gets lots of love for her photo. Shannon looks lovely. Ashlee thinks that Camille is doing a joke pose and ALT thinks Camille is too pageant. Nigel goes on and on about how "lustable" Laura's photo is. I now suspect that Tyra brought in the iPad this cycle so that Nigel wouldn't sneak any of the photos into the bathroom with him. ALT loves the Wanda Sue-creation that Laura is wearing, and Tyra loves the Isis-creation that Isis is wearing. Isis' photo on the other hand...Nigel thinks it's slightly dirty. ALT's quote: "Standing here you're fabulous. Here [gestures to photo], I don't want to know you, I don't want to see you, I would be ruuuuuuuuuning for the car." Ouch. Tyra of course loves the photo.

Kayla does not look "free" enough eating her hotdog. Tyra cautions Allison not to go too cute in her photos. Alexandria looks more sweet than tough in her picture, but the judges love her photo and haircut. Sheena is not unexpected enough eating her hotdog. Ashlee wishes she were holding up her dress or something. ALT thinks Angelea looks like Niki Taylor, Sophia Loren and Melania Trump. Everyone loves Lisa's interpretation of daring...which is chewing her hot dog up and showing the chewed food to the camera. Daring? I guess. Gross? Yes. The best is that ALT thinks this looks like Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City. SJP must have stood up ALT and AW at their Tuesday night supper club at Daniel for him to say something so mean.

ALT and Tyra love Bre's new look, but think she looks sad. Tyra wonders where Bre's energy went and Bre reminds them that she is no longer 19, and is more reserved at 25. This sets Ashlee off as she is 26 and does not want to be mature or reserved thank you very much. Tyra does some mess of an impression, and all judges agree her photo is fine but needs more sparkle.

Photos in Tyra's Hands! Lisa is called first and her regurgitated hot dog will be shown all over the internets on the Pinks hotdog website. Bottom 2 this week are Kayla & Sheena, and Sheena gets the boot. Sadly, the elimination of the contestant whose brand word was "unexpected" was not unexpected at all. Chin up, Sheena! You are awesome. I hope you get to host a reality competition show soon, perhaps one that will beat ANTM in the ratings and get it cancelled. Bye Sheena!

Next week: Mario Lopez! Dancing on stilts! In pairs! What?

See you next week!

XOXO,
Emily

It's Tyra!!!! - ANTM All-Stars Week 3

Hi! Want to find out what happened on ANTM this week? Let's do this!

What did we learn about Tyra this week?

Not much. She's still wearing those dreadful suspenders (this week: skinny leather).

Tyra informs us that SNL once did an ANTM parody where they were mocking Tyra. Apparently it was "hilarious" and they went from Tyra over-enunciating her catch phrases like "here is your best shot" to Tyra's version of keepin' it real ("wooo wooo yeah, gurl, you better work it. It's fieeeeeeerce"). I watched it, and Maya Rudolph is a way better Tyra than Tyra.

Tyra also informs us about her new copywrited word this cycle: the booty tooch™. A booty tooch is essentially what your bum does when you arch your back. That is hopefully the last time I will have to write about this particular Tyra-ism.

Did anything else happen this week?

We being the episode with Isis telling us about her star quality. Dum de dum dum dummmmmm! Alison gives a weird speech with her hand over her mouth. It's strange.

Kristin Cavallari comes for a visit! I have a soft spot for her as she was pretty fantastic on Laguna Beach back in the day. I bet she's fun to hang out with. Plus, she's gorgeous and doesn't look like she's had mega plastic surgery unlike those other Hills ladies. Kristin is there to tell the girls that they are going to have haters no matter what they do, so it's best to just accept it and embrace their success. Fair enough. I wonder why Tyra didn't feel like delivering this lesson herself? She totally has like 100 times as many haters as Kristin Cavalleri!

Challenge! The girls are greeted by Nigel Barker at The Grove in downtown LA. They are going to be tested on how well they answer the "tough questions". They will work in groups and will be interviewed by this winner...
Lisa and Bianca get to pick teams, because they've had the top 2 photos last week. Team 1 is Lisa, Alexandria, Angelea, Dominique, Isis and Laura; Team 2 is Bianca, Bre, Allison, Camille, Kayla and Shannon. The twist is that the girls on the winning team are all safe from elimination. What? I don't think they've ever done that before on ANTM. I guess they are getting ideas from shows like Biggest Loser now? Next they'll make the girls do a photo shoot where they're doing this:

Mario is so gross and smarmy! Team 1 is up first. Lisa seems fake. Isis does well and seems calm. Angelea gives an intelligent sounding answer. Lisa keeps giving the other girls weird high fives, which is distracting and annoying even though she likely means well. An audience member asks Alexandria why she puts on such a tough exterior with the other contestants. Alexandria starts off responding well, but gets interrupted by Lisa.

Team 2 is up! Mario asks Bianca if fans are seeing the real her, and she responds by talking about "word vomit". She gets a buzzer noise from the hilarious ANTM sound editors. Mario then asks Allison why she's there if modelling isn't her number one priority. She doesn't miss a beat and talks about how much modelling helps her with her other artistic pursuits. She gets a ding! An audience member asks Kayla if she is still uncomfortable working with male models. Kayla uses her spirit word from last week twice in her answer, so I guess she does well?

Nigel critiques Lisa for jumping in when the other girls were talking and tells Angelea that she needs to show her personality and be less conservative. Angelea finds this critique "fustrating". She is all about being professional, y'all! Nigel tells Bianca to stop talking about vomit and critiques Kayla for using her spirit word, telling her that "any one word is multi-faceted". At least he didn't tell her that being a lesbian is so 5 years ago, like Tyra's brand expert from last week.
Sorry Jane Lynch, you are so yesterday...
Team 2 wins! None of these girls can get the snips even if they have a terrible photo. Allison is the challenge winner and her prize is another Extra interview. Angelea has a temper tantrum about Nigel's critique on the way back to the house. I know the editors put it in there for us to think Angelea is going home, but I very much enjoyed her speech, especially:
Whatever, I'm not going to get on there and be all "uhh, yeah, yeah" okay, 'cause you want me to be this ghetto bitch, that's what I'm a be in an interview. No. I know how to conduct myself, bitch, I worked at a bank. I worked at a bank. You think I was talking like this at a bank?
Those fellas working at the Key Bank in the Walden Galleria are so proud of their girl Angelea! I'm sure they toasted to her at their Thursday night happy hour drinking session at PF Chang's this week...during the intermission of the Sabres game, obvo.

Photo shoot! The Tyra Mail is about long legs, and the girls think automatically there will be spiders or giraffes at the shoot. Nope...just stilts. My pals that I was watching with immediately called out the copycat-ness of this shoot, as it's already been done on the most recent seasons of Project Runway and Australia's Next Top Model. Anywho, it still beats eating hotdogs. Each of the challenge losers is paired with a challenge winner. The photographer is Alexandria's doppelganger. If only she'd been wearing a bonnet!

 The photo shoot is mega boring, save for a funny stilts dance courtesy of Isis.

We also find out that Bre looks aaaaaammaaaaaaaazing in Steve Urkel's glasses. She is super cute.

We see the girls getting ready for panel, and we get more awesomeness from Isis. As she's putting on her hat to complement her cute black dress, she says: "oh my god! I'm going to look like Black Swan!" Love, love, love.

Panel! I just realized this week that they've quit it with the fake "backstage" shots of the judging panel this season. Dommage. Kristin Cavallari is our guest judge this week, and I'm super excited it's not Mario Lopez.

The judges like Alexandria & Shannon's photo. My bff, Andre Leon Talley, thinks their photo is soooo Lady Gaga. The judges love their shot. Angelea and Allison are up next, but before they show the photo Angelea asks Nigel to explain the critique he gave her at the Extra challenge. She doesn't go all ghetto on him as she said she would earlier, but I like that she spoke up about being confused by him telling her to be silly in an interview situation. Nigel tells her that he loves her personality and wanted to see it in the interview. The judges like the photo but think Allison did better than Angelea because she did a you-know-what-beginning with a t to her you-know-what beginning with a b.

ALT loves the photo of Dominique and Kayla, and commands it be hung in his salon. He must have a huge salon, as it already has many other ANTM photos in there. Kristin doesn't love the photo because Dominique looks like she's pulling on her hair. The judges don't like Camille and Isis' photo. Camille makes some excuse about trying to dance like at Trinidadian Carnival, but Tyra isn't having it. It's totally a bad sign that they picked a photo of Isis just standing, when we saw her doing tons of leg lifts and movement during the shoot. Laura and Bre's photo is well received and called elegant. Wanda Sue gets yet another shout out for another awesome panel outfit for Laura. Lisa and Bianca get a great critique, but Nigel asks Lisa if she ever gets her photo taken with her legs closed.

Deliberation! In honour of the spirit words given to the girls last week, I'm going to distill the judges' critiques to one (or 2) word(s) per contestant:
Shannon = safe
Allison = feelin' it
Kayla = locked up
Bianca = strong
Bre = lacking smize
Camille = least favourite
Alexandria = forehead
Angelea = weak
Dominique = memorable
Isis = pretty
Laura = fashion
Lisa = authentic

Photos in Tyra's hands! Allison has best picture, and Alexandria is called first from the losing group. Angelea and Isis are in the bottom 2 and Isis gets the boot. This makes no sense to me. Not only was Isis one of the strongest competitors, but she is smart, elegant, fun and funny. She would have made a great correspondent on Extra. I personally think that she got eliminated this week because the producers want Bianca to win and Isis was too strong of a competitor. Isis, you are awesome, a great model and a great role model. I hope you have lots of future success!

Next week: CSI! Medical Emergency! Yikes!

One quick note before I finish up: a bunch of blogs this week reported that Kelly Cutrone will be replacing ALT next cycle on ANTM. This is, frankly, ridiculous. I love ALT and agree he is way too fantastic to be stuck on ANTM for any more cycles. I also am a big fan of Kelly Cutrone, so her joining the judges' panel is terrible news. Tyra doesn't have the best track record of playing nice with strong and intelligent female judges (remember Janice? or Twiggy? or Paulina?). I hope for Kelly's sake that she changes her mind before Cycle 18 starts filming, mainly so she won't have to deal with Tyra's Tyra-ness at all. You're better than that, Kelly!

My pick to replace ALT would be Christian Siriano. He would be cool with playing along with Tyra's dumb banter, but would call Tyra out on her shenanigans too. If Tyra is set on a lady judge, she should try to get Kelly Osbourne, who has judged a reality show before (Project Catwalk), has fashion knowledge and would tell Tyra where she could put her funny accents.

XOXO,
Emily

Steps to the Cure: Selena's Survival Story

Breast cancer survivors flank designer
Afua Sam (green) at previous year'sshow.
A girl I used to know from high school used to have this saying: fashion over function.

What she meant is that if an item of clothing looks good, then wear it! No pain, no gain!

I thought of this saying when I recently learned about Steps to the Cure, an amazingly altruistic function with fashion as its center piece.

 Started by Maryland-based plastic surgeon Dr. Larry Lickstein and his wife, Lori, Steps to the Cure is a runway event featuring models who are all breast cancer survivors. They have went through the pain, and now they have everything to gain.

A survivor struts her stuff down the catwalk.
Local fashion designers and fine jewelry merchants also donate their time and couture to help ensure that the models look stunning as they glide down the catwalk.

"This event aims at raising funds to support research towards breast cancer," says Afua Sam of Studio D'Maxsi. She is participating in the event as a designer.
At a recent visit to Sam's home studio, I caught up with the charming and effervescent 'Cure' model Selena Quintanilla. Diagnosed at just 28 years old, she is now in remission from stage 3 breast cancer after two years of chemotherapy treatment.

Her name may be the same as the legendary Spanish language pop star, but the Selena Quintanilla I met in Silver Spring, Md. has a triumphant ending to her tragic tale.
Selena and Afua strike a pose next to the "BRA" dress.
Off camera, the 30-year-old survivor lifted up her shirt and showed me her scars after having a double mastectomy, followed by full reconstructive surgery.

"I'm fine with it," said Selena. She told me it was actually harder for her to lose her hair (which used to be long), than it was for her to lose her breasts.

I was truly touched after meeting her and hearing her story. I know that she is here do to some great things in this world, and I really feel that it was a gift to have met her.

And this is her gift to you: As stated in the video above, the doctors told Selena that she did not have cancer the first time she went to check a lump in her breast. It was only after she went back a year later with the same lump that she was diagnosed. Now she's sharing her story in hopes that others will get checked and rechecked and checked again, if they feel like something is wrong in their bodies.

If you would like to see Selena walk down the runway at Steps to the Cure, then get mark your calendar for April 16 at Valley Mansion in Baltimore. Click here for more details.

Yes, you know the world famous author Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I first fell in love with his literary genius after reading "Cien Anos De Soledad" or in English translated as "100 Hundred Years of Solitude"-- so if you wish to enter a word of literary magical realism and creativity then you haven't lived until you've read the work of Marquez. (The widely acclaimed story, considered to be the author's masterpiece, was first published in Spanish in 1967, and succeeded so well that it has been translated into thirty-seven languages and sold more than 20 million copies.)

I am so thrilled to head on over to the Gala Hispanic Theatre to see "La candida Erendira/The Innocent and Her Heartless Grandmother" up on the stage.
