There's nothing better than a lazy Sunday. And a good lazy Sunday gets even better when I find a good disaster movie on cable. TBS, USA, TNT, and FX are always good places to find an alien invasion or natural disaster wreaking havoc on some major metropolitan area.
I always start watching with the intention to just watch until some other show comes back from commercial or until something better comes on at the top of the hour, but I always find myself watching through to the end. Even if I've seen it many times before. I'm not sure why exactly. Maybe it's that they're all so formulaic that it doesn't take much effort to watch. It's all boom boom, Statue of Liberty loses her head or gets submerged, citizens panic and start dying, hero survives by sheer luck, earth is saved by some gibberish science, people cheer, tender moment with child or dog, the end. Sunday afternoon made.
There's another reason I think I like these movies, but it's a little embarrassing and maybe a little morbid. I like watching real places get destroyed on screen. Bonus points if it's somewhere I've lived or visited. And I like to speculate on the off screen destruction as well. For example, if the White House is blasted by an alien laser beam I'll wonder if my old apartment a few blocks away is in the blast zone. Or if a tsunami hits Malibu I'll wonder what's left of Long Beach, where I grew up. Is that weird? If it makes you a little less creeped out, I really don't like it when the same scenarios are played out in a documentary or other real life speculation. It makes me jittery to think about it happening for real, but in the context of a cheesy fictional movie, I love watching the places I love engulfed in chaos.
So stay tuned for some future posts about these lovable disasters. First up will be '90s classic: Volcano. Get ready to go with the (lava) flow!
